Welcome to the home of San Juan Vineyards: As my Winemaker say, “I want my wines to be honest.”
San Juan Vineyards was founded in 1996 by Steve and Yvonne Swanberg, and Tim Judkins.
Yvonne Swanberg has been operating San Juan Vineyards since 2002. We are the only commercial operating vineyard and winery on San Juan Island. Yvonne has a great Winemaker in Chris Primus. You can read more about Chris in the “Who Us” section.
Madeleine Angevine and Siegerrebe are the Estate varietals of San Juan Vineyards, and are very proud of these two varietals. Our wines win awards and receive accolades and great reviews. We have outlined these in Awards and Accolades.
SAD NEWS: I hurt when I tell people how we so unfortunately lost our Madeleine Angevine harvest to “sour” rot. This is a rot that can occur the last 10 days before Harvest. It is mainly due to heavy rain falls shortly before ripening, invasions of yellow jackets or fruit flies, coupled with the type of grape (thin skins and tight clusters). It was quite the time, and about one chance in 500 of this happening.
The Siegerrebe harvest was successful in the pouring down rain!
WHAT WINE IS YOUR FAVORITE? This is a good way to contact us to get on our mailing list, order wine, etc. This gets our attention. You can also be added to our “Siegerrebe” list for the Spring, 2014, release.
2010 Merlot by Stan the Wine Man -
2010 San Juan Vineyards Merlot (Horse Heaven Hills, WA)… $24.99
Subtle cedar note aromas come through along with notes of currants, cassis, vanilla, tobacco and red flowers. Smooth and rich currant and cassis notes dominate the front of the palate. Spice comes through on the mid-palate and intensifies into a long finish of tobacco, licorice and currants with a little leather thrown in. Nice balance of acidity and minerality backed by polished, structured tannins. This baby will be a beauty in the next two to four years. (A-)
